Battery storage (BESS) strategy

The BESS strategy is a pre-feasibility study that determines whether a company in Chile should install battery storage, and at what size. It evaluates three uses — cutting peak demand charges, making better use of an existing solar plant, and backup — and delivers a cash flow for each scenario. It costs from UF 55.

Key points

  • Pre-feasibility study: from UF 55.
  • Technical specifications and bid evaluation: from UF 40.
  • Based on 15-minute meter data, not monthly averages.
  • Delivered 15 business days after the meter data is received.

Who it is for

  • Companies with high demand charges during peak hours.
  • Companies with a solar plant that exports a lot of energy to the grid at a low value.
  • Operations that cannot stop during a power cut.
  • Agricultural businesses with irrigation and cold storage.

What it includes

  1. Load profile analysis with 15-minute meter data.
  2. Tariff review, including capacity and peak demand charges.
  3. Use scenarios: peak shaving, solar self-consumption and backup.
  4. Sizing in kW and kWh for each scenario.
  5. Cash flow and payback per scenario.
  6. Technical specification to request comparable quotes.

Fees are indicative. UF is Chile's inflation-indexed unit of account (ISO 4217: CLF).

Process

  1. The client sends 12 electricity bills and requests the meter data from the distribution company.
  2. Scenario modelling.
  3. Report and decision meeting.

Why now

Storage has moved to the centre of Chile's power system. By December 2025 the country had 1,575 MW of storage in operation and 6,770 MW under construction, according to the renewable energy association ACERA, driven by the 6,084 GWh of renewable energy curtailed that year. For a company, the practical effect is more suppliers and more offers to compare.

Background

In 2015, CORFO awarded CLP 200 million to BORG, a project led by Carlos Jofré at Ecoenergías to develop an organic redox flow battery prototype (project code 15COTE-46252).

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does a battery make sense without a solar plant?

Sometimes. If the company pays high demand charges during peak hours, a battery that shaves that peak can pay for itself. The study quantifies it.

What data is needed?

Twelve electricity bills and 15-minute meter data, which is requested from the distribution company. If it is not available, a logger can be installed for a few weeks.
